Custom Garden Gate
Inspired by the beautiful garden gates of Cambria, I wanted to create a garden
gate using traditional furniture grade joinery - meaning no nails or screws.
The gate I designed was made of redwood, with an arched top, and the frame was assembled using bridle joints - similar to a mortise and tenon joint. It is a traditional joint used in frames, and when glued, is very strong.
The gate spindles were doweled into the frame with 3/4" hardwood dowels, another very strong joint.
The whole thing was glued and clamped, and left to dry. The edges were rounded with a router bit, and then the whole assembly was sanded smooth.
The address numbers were routed in freehand.
Then the whole thing was given several coats of marine resin - the kind used on sailboats and surfboards. Finally, the hardware was installed, and the gate was complete.
